Marta Martínez-Vicente, PhD

Marta Martínez-Vicente holds a degree in Chemistry and a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Valencia. From 2004 to 2008, she conducted postdoctoral research in Dr. Ana Maria Cuervo’s laboratory at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (New York, USA), focusing on autophagy in neurodegenerative diseases and aging. In 2010, she joined the Neurodegenerative Diseases Group at the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) as a Miguel Servet researcher. In 2016, she was appointed Senior Researcher and established her independent team, the Autophagy and Lysosomal Dysfunction Laboratory, within the Neurodegenerative Diseases Group.

Her team investigates the role of autophagy–lysosomal dysfunction in neurodegeneration, integrating basic, clinical, and translational research approaches. The main research lines focus on: (1) investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying autophagy–lysosomal dysfunction in Parkinson’s disease; (2) developing innovative nanotechnology-based therapies aimed at restoring lysosomal function in Parkinson’s disease and related disorders; and (3) elucidating the molecular and pathological connections between Parkinson’s disease and lysosomal storage disorder.
